EV Training

The Basics:
Every time you defeat a Pokémon in battle, all the Pokémon who were active gain experience points. Along with these experience points comes a hidden 'Effort Value'. For every four EVs a Pokémon gets, the stat associated with it increases when the Pokémon levels up. You can have a maximum of 255 EVs in one stat and a maximum of 510 EVs on a Pokémon, meaning if you want to max out a stat, you will want to get 252 EVs in that stat. Since 510 is not divisible by 4, you have 2 extra EVs you can throw away.

Getting More:
Not patient enough to fight 252 Pidgeys to max out your Speed? No problem. There are 4 ways to speed up EV training.
1. Power Items- These add 4 EVs to their associated stat no matter which Pokémon you fight. If you fight a Pidgey with a Power Anklet equipped, you will gain 5 Speed EVs (4 from the Power item+1 from the Pokémon)
2. Macho Brace- Doubles the EVs obtained after a battle for the Pokémon equipped. Killing a Pidgey yields 2 Speed EV instead of 1.
3. Fighting more powerful Pokémon- Pidgeys give 1 Speed EV. Pidgeotto give 2 Speed EVs. Pidgeot give 3 Speed EVs. Simple, right?
4. Pokérus- Doubles any and all EVs your Pokémon would have gained from the battle.
Fighting a Pidgeot while holding a Power Anklet gives you 14 EVs if you have Pokérus. That means you only need to fight 18 battles to get 252 Speed EVS!

How do I get Pokérus?:
You can either fight a wild Pokémon who has Pokérus, you can catch a Pokémon with Pokérus, or you can have one of your Pokémon who currently has Pokérus infect another Pokémon.
Pokérus is pretty hard to get, but once you get it, you got it.
Make sure it spreads to at LEAST 1 Pokémon who will remain in a box, since Pokérus is automatically cured after approximately 24 hours unless the Pokémon is stored in a box.

Who gives what EVs?:
A complete list of what EVs you get when defeating a Pokémon is here. Note that some Pokémon, such as Octillery, give EVs in more than 1 stat. EV training on these Pokémon can speed up the process or ruin your Pokémon, depending on what you're going for. Special sweeper Alakazam gaining 1 Attack and 1 Sp.Attack EV every battle isn't as effective as gaining just 1 Sp.Attack every level.

I screwed up my EVs!
There are 6 Berries- 1 for every stat- which you can use to reduce EVs. The berries are:
HP- Pomeg Berry
Atk- Kelpsy Berry
Def- Qualot Berry
SpAtk- Hondew Berry
SpDef- Grepa Berry
Spe- Tamato Berry
Each berry will reduce the EVs of the stat it is associated with by 10 if the EVs are under 100(110?) or to 100 if the EVs total 100(110?) or more. Giving a pokemon 11 of one of these berries is guaranteed to reduce its EV in a stat to 0.

You can also use items like Protein, Carbos, etc. to increase EVs by 10, up to a maximum of 100.

---

Breeding:

...for Nature:
Let's say you want a Garchomp with a high attack and a high speed. You'll probably want it to have a beneficial nature for one of these 2 stats. Jolly or Adamant would work well. But alas, you can only find Timid, Lax, Bold and Lonely Gibles.
Fortunately you can pass natures down by breeding!
If you find a parent with a nature you'd like to pass down to the offspring, simply make it hold an Everstone and put it in the DayCare with another parent.
If you don't have access to HeartGold or SoulSilver, there are only 2 Pokémon who can pass down the nature when holding an Everstone: the mother or a Ditto, and if you're breeding a female with a Ditto, the Ditto's nature has a 50% chance of being passed down, not the female's. This is somewhat limiting, as you cannot ever pass down the nature of a male and you need to use a male of the same egg group as the female to pass her nature down. However, with access to HG/SS, you can give an Everstone to either parent, male, female or Ditto, and there will be a 50% chance of the parent with the Everstone to pass down its nature. NOTE: if the parents are from different languages (i.e. a Japanese parent with an English parent) this method will NOT WORK. The nature will instead be chosen randomly.

...for Shininess:
As noted above in the 'Breeding for Nature' section, Pokémon from different real world regions cannot be given an Everstone for a 50% chance of passing down natures. Instead, they have a 1/2048 chance of being shiny. That is 4 times better than the 1/8192 of a Pokémon in the wild/bred normally!

...for IVs:
This is where breeding starts to get complicated. I'll try to organize this as best as I can, but I still don't 100% understand this part. Bear with me.
HeartGold and SoulSilver: The baby inherits 3 IVs, each from a different stat and a random parent. If one or both parents is holding a Power item(e.g. Power Weight), the baby will inherit the IV of the stat the power item affects (e.g. HP for Power Weight) from one of the parents, then the baby will inherit 2 other different IVs from a random parent. If both parents hold DIFFERENT Power Items(e.g. Power Weight and Anklet), the offspring will inherit either the HP IV from the parent holding the Power Weight OR the Speed IV of the parent holding the Power Anklet, then will inherit 2 random stats (other than the ones associated with the Power items) from random parents.
Diamond/Pearl/Platinum: A random IV is chosen and passed down from one of the parents to the baby. Then a second random IV (other than HP) if chosen and passed down from one of the parents to the baby. Then a third random IV (other than HP or Defence) is chosen and passed down from one of the parents to the baby. If the same IV is chosen more than once (e.g. Attack is chosen all 3 times) the most recent one is used, regardless of which one is higher or whether or not the IV was passed down from the same parent more than once.

Breeders:

Anyone who is a breeder, post what stats/natures you can breed and if there are any 'rare' Pokémon you can breed.

Who can breed what
LimeyManBakura:
Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, Smeargle, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Feebas, Turtwig, Phione
(more when I can breed in HG)

Battles:

Different types of battles include(but are not limited to):
Standard battle- A battle where you are not allowed to use any Uber tiered Pokémon and you follow the Standard clauses. (clauses may be added or removed, but standard clauses are: Evasion, Freeze, Sleep, OHKO, Species, Self-KO)
Uber battle- The same as standard except Uber Pokémon are allowed. (optional clauses include: Soul Dew)
NU/UU/BL- Similar to Ubers except no Pokémon from a higher tier is allowed (i.e. you can't use BL or OU in a UU battle). Again, standard clauses apply.
Monotype battle- Your entire team must be the same type (for example, Dark). Pokémon with 2 types are allowed as long as they are the type you're using. Wild cards (pokémon other than your type) may be allowed, depending on the battlers.
Monocolor battle- Your team must be a specific color. Whether or not you use the Pokédex color, the Pokémon's natural color or the Pokémon's current color is up to you and your opponent (for example, if going by the Pokémons Pokédex color, I would use Mareep in a monowhite team. If I was going by natural color, Mareep would be in a yellow team. If the Mareep were shiny and we were going by current color, I would use Mareep in a pink team.)
IV battle- A battle to check the IVs of one or more Pokémon. Standard rules usually don't apply, as IV battlers usually just jot down their Pokémons' stats at level 100, finish the battle/disconnect, then use an IV calculator to see whether their freshly bred Larvitar has max IVs in Attack.
NOTE: For anyone accepting IV battles, please, do not disconnect. I get that some of you are strained for time, but all you have to do is say "hey, I'm sorry, but I have something really important I have to do to do". Heck, you don't even have to disconnect. Just shut your DS, plug it in if you want to, and do whatever it is you were going to do. The person checking their IVs should ALWAYS be the one to run away / d/c / whatever. If both of you are checking IVs, instead of disconnecting, do TWO rounds of attacks then Flee/disconnect on the third. That way, just in case someone accidentally attacks/switches Pokémon, they can still check their IVs.
Trades:

Trading etiquette:

If you know something is hacked, say it is hacked

If you are unsure of whether or not something is hacked, say you are unsure of whether or not it is hacked

If you know 100% for a fact that the Pokémon is legit(caught/bred it yourself, etc.), say it is legit

Although the Pokémon may be LEGAL, that doesn't mean it is LEGIT.

For the love of Arceus, DON'T SCAM ANYONE! We're a tightly knit community and I would hate to see something bad to one of us because another one of us was being a jerk

Unless you both agree to it, there's no trade-backs. You can check the person's 'Mons before you trade and you can back out at any time. You have nobody to blame but yourself if you make the wrong decision

Don't make really stupid offers (trading your level 2 Bidoof for a Modest Feebas) and try to keep your offers in 1 post

Likewise, if you want to trade your Pokémon, list all of the Pokémon you want, not just 1 or 2

Example of a good trade request:
Looking to trade a legit shiny level 23 Bold ♀ Eevee w/ Wish for an Adamant or Jolly Kangaskhan with Body Slam, a Timid or Modest Chimchar/Monferno/Infernape, a Bold Nosepass or Probopass or a Lax Slowking with Seismic Toss.
Eevee's IVs are: 30/12/31/25/26/31. EVs are 192 in HP, 248 in Def, 68 in SpDef but I can clear them

Example of a good responce:
I have a legit level 41 Timid Infernape I would like to trade. Moves: Mach Punch, Close Combat, Ember, Taunt. IVs are 24/26/16/31/22/29 EVs are 144 in Attack, 76 in Def, 160 in SpAtk, 130 in Speed. I was a noob when I started with Infernape so his EVs are all over the place, and I can't clear them.

"Good" = "thorough", not "always accepted". Don't take it personally if someone doesn't accept or respond right away, as they're probably posting on more active forums such as Smogon as well to get the best deal. Also, if you don't know your EVs/IVs, it's not the end of the world. EVs can be reset and, unless someone's going for a specific Hidden Power/really competitive (professional) playing, IVs don't make that much of a difference. Furthermore, if you don't know the IVs, saying the Characteristic helps identify its best IV.

Requested trades:
LimeyManBakura: Requested- Torchic/Combusken/Blaziken with Mimic, Mareep/Flaafy/Ampharos with Mimic

---

The Pokéradar:

Something introduced in D/P/Pt was the new Pokéradar. This handy little Key Item not only allows you to find rare, otherwise unobtainable Pokémon (à la Miltank), but it also increases the chances of finding a Shiny Pokémon.

Chaining:
When you use the Pokéradar in tall grass, you will usually see 1-4 patches of grass shaking at various speeds. Entering one of these patches of grass forces a battle on you. When you defeat the wild Pokémon or if you decide to catch it, you have completed the first encounter in the chain. The Pokéradar music will continue to play after the battle, and you will see more patches of grass shaking. If the next patch of grass you go to contains the same Pokémon you just fought, and you defeat/catch it, you will have a chain of 2. Beware, as any wild Pokémon other than the ones in the shaking grass will break your chain, as will fighting a Pokémon of a different species, so Repels are advised. With the Pokétch application, you can see what your current chain is as well as your top 3 chains.

Chaining for Shininess:
As the size of your chain increases, the chance of encountering a shiny Pokémon increases. After you use the Pokéradar, you usually see patches of grass moving for a couple seconds, sometimes glowing white, but if you are lucky, a patch of grass will sparkle as if a shiny Pokémon were sent out in battle. This patch of grass is guaranteed to contain a shiny Pokémoon. The chances of this occurring increases to a maximum of 0.005% or 1/200. These odds are much more favorable than the standard 0.000122% or 1/8192 of finding a Pokémon in the wild/breeding one without the Masuda method.

---

Move Tutoring and You:

Sometimes there are really cool moves a Pokémon can only learn with the help of someone else. This person is a Move Tutor. They can teach valuable moves otherwise unobtainable by a Pokémon.

Mimic:
Perhaps THE most valuable move you can tutor a Pokémon in Gen III is Mimic. If you have FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald or XD: Gale of Darkness with a Pokémon you would eventually like to trade via GenIV/V Wi-Fi, teach that Pokémon Mimic.
What's so Great About Mimic?:
"You copy the opponent's last move, you keep it for the duration of the battle, and it only has 5 PP. WHAT THE HELL IS SO GREAT ABOUT MIMIC?!"
Shut up and read.
In HeartGold and SoulSilver there is a glitch, The Transform Glitch, which allows a Pokémon with Mimic to learn any move. Want a Blaziken with Fly, Surf and Spore? You can have it. All you need is:
-A Pokémon with Mimic(generally acquired via FR/LG/E/XD tutor)
-A Ditto(so you can Mimic Transform)
-A Pokémon with Rage+any moves you want(Smeargle works nicely, as a lot of good moves are exclusive to one or a few Pokémon (such as Spore) who do not learn Rage)

If the Pokémon whose moveset you copy includes Mimic/Transform, you can use this trick until you either A) remove Mimic/Transform or B) Perform the Transform glitch on a Pokémon who knows 4 moves that are not Mimic or Transform.

Seismic Toss
Another VERY useful move, patrticularly for walls, which can only be tutored in FR/LG/E/XD. Seismic Toss is found on a large number of competitive Blissies, Registeels, Clefables, sometimes even Miltanks(although Miltanks are generally more Combat Clerics than Tanks).
Not many Pokémon can learn Seismic Toss in Generation IV - Primape, Machamp, Pinsir, Hariyama, Arceus, Ursaring and Miltank - and the only one on that list who can use it well is Miltank.
A fixed 100 damage isn't bad, but it fails to break the Substitutes of Pokémon with 404+ HP (the most common Substitute passers/buffers) and since most of the Pokémon who can learn Seismic Toss in Gen IV work best as sweepers (constant 1 or 2 hit K.O.s against most Pokémon), they're meant to dish out double what Seismic Toss does and, unless their attack stat been significantly weakened or they are fighting a buffed up wall, they usually will be dealing more than SToss.
On the other hand, the Walls who can learn it in Gen III consider Seismic Toss a godsend. 100 damage can be 2-4x what they normally do to walls and wall breakers, and it can break some of the weaker Substitutes (such as Ninjask's lame 65~81 hp subs)

Offering- Any freshly bred starter, several rare, common Pokémon, any holdable item/TM. Legit* Shaymin

[OOC: This is ridiculously long, but it's finally done. I may make edits. I'm an editing ninja. Without further ado, Halo: The RP]

*~~~~~*
::March 4th, 2553::
Location: Unknown Sector, Aboard the remains of the Frigate UNSC Forward Unto Dawn

"Unfortunate, really, what happened to them. Although, judging by Spark's multiple betrayal set, maybe it wasn't the best idea to pin their final hopes on one AI," she thought aloud, her avatar flickering between her normal shade of blue to a decidedly rampant shade of red. That seemed to be a similarity of human AIs and Forerunner ones- this whole dramatic color change, as if they were telling some invisible audience, nay, beaning them over the face with the fact that "This unit is undergoing Rampancyyyy~!" Cortana laughed softly to herself in the darkness. There were far too many conveniences in her life. Then again, she was paired with 117- supposedly a bastion of luck. She made a quick conjecture that whatever watched over their universe must have figured his unusual penchant for being incredibly fortunate was a good enough excuse to basically turn both of them into Jesus and Boobsjesus. She shook her head, as her avatar flickered back to blue. Rampancy was a real trip- the thoughts that occurred to her were always some form of fantastical, strange mix of human and Forerunner history.

Visible from the broken half of the ship was a planet- one that it seemed the wreckage was being quickly pulled towards. The planet looked burned out, but yet did not look like the work of Covenant plasma fire. Large glyphs seemed to paint the surface, as if the architecture of the world had been specifically designed to look as such from orbit. Cortana quickly calculated what she could of the ship's trajectory, and from crude estimates, it was pretty obvious that the two of them were about to find out what the hell this world was.

As the ship became entrapped in the gravitational field of the planet, the ship shuddered and began to rapidly fall to the surface.

"Brace for impact," the AI mumbled into the darkness, knowing that it would go unheard. As the outside of the ship began to burn a bright red-orange from the heat of atmospheric impact, Cortana's avatar flickered red a few more times, and she prepared to begin the awakening sequence.

*~~~~~*
Location: Surface of Unknown Planet, Remains of the Frigate UNSC Forward Unto Dawn

"Wake up sequence initiated. C'mon Chief, I need you now," the AI chirped, gently running the cryo tube through the opening sequence. The door began to hiss softly, and then slowly opened. Spartan-117 stepped out carefully, wondering why exactly he had been pulled from cryo.

The first thing he saw was Cortana, who, although trying her best to conceal the rapid decline of rampancy, still flickered red every once in a while. Disconcerting, he thought, but perhaps it can be fixed.

Maybe it was that he had lost so many of what he considered siblings, maybe it was some odd form of optimism after winning the Covenant-Human War, but the thought that it would not be able to be fixed refused to cross his mind.

"Good morning. It seems we've crashed," Cortana said, motioning to the side of the bay. Where there had once been a wall, there was now a gaping hole, showing the planet's surface. It was charred, mostly barren, although in the distance stood some sort of metal structure, glowing an eerie red.

"Any idea where we are?" The Spartan moved over to the weapons rack near the cryo tube, pulling up his Assault Rifle.

"None. Nav is down, and this sector was uncharted as is. The planet seemed to have odd glyphs on it from orbit- they were familiar. Not Covenant, but familiar," she started, "It may be Forerunner."

"Don't tell me we're going to have to deal with another set of Monitors," the Spartan mumbled, placing the rifle on his back. He grabbed the storage disk, put Cortana back onto it, and slipped it into the slot in his helmet. Ah. So nice to be partially schizophrenic again.

"Be careful, Chief. We have no idea what's on this world- and since it appears Forerunner, there may even be Flood. Stay alert," Cortana warned.

"Don't have to tell me twice," replied the Spartan, stepping out of the gaping gash in the side of the cryo bay, and onto the planet's charred surface.

Complete and utter nothingness. There really wasn't even a breeze- just the soft existence of ashes. In the distance, the large, seemingly metal structure from before could be seen, still emitting a reddish glow in some areas. Whatever served for a sun of the planet had seemingly set, leaving the soft ebbing charring of naturally occurring metals embedded in the soil the only light in the area.

"Well, I guess our best bet is to head for the structure- if nothing's there, we can come back here, and I'll put you back into cryogenics, and we'll just have to hope that someone's actually looking for you," Cortana said, hoping to whatever deity existed that there was something there- the hope of someone actually looking for an M.I.A. Spartan was highly unlikely.

*~~~~~*
By the time the duo had reached the structure, the sun was beginning to rise. It was eerily similar to Sol, maybe only a little larger. The structure was still glowing red in some areas, and some of the support struts had melted through the middle, leaving both sides to hang weakly, still barely attached to their points of origin. It definitely had not been maintained- not much of a surprise, considering the fact that its creators, if the AI's conjectures about the planet were correct, were long gone.

"Let's hope this is some superliminal communication center or something-" Cortana started. She never finished her intended phrase, as something attacked her circuits. A presence formed in the back of her mind, softly uttering commands. Whatever it was, it was urging them to enter the facility. It had a voice- male, fatigued, not much different from a human voice. Unsurprisingly, the Spartan could feel something was off- and although he could not hear the voice that was demanding them to enter the structure, he began to wonder about the AI's lifespan, and about the rumors of rampancy. He shook his head. The only path they had was to enter the structure. The two of them just had to hope that the voice wasn't another Flood trap.

Pulling his assault rifle from his back, 117 stepped into what seemed to be a front entrance. The doors were made of a tough glass, and were only a foot or two taller than he was- a Sangheili probably would have had to duck a bit to get in. The floor was a tough metal substance- it offered little decorative purpose, indicating that the structure probably wasn't civilian. The walls were a similar metal- a dark grey. The room wasn't too inviting, that was for sure. At the far end of the room, there stood a large door. Above it flickered holographic symbols- definitely Forerunner.

"Well, I guess I was right about the origin of this planet," Cortana chirped, wondering if the voice was going to make any more commands of the two.

"Forward. Into the doorway. Take the 7th panel." The voice disappeared again. Sure was a pushy bastard.

"Chief, let's go through that door at the far end. Maybe the glyphs indicate a communication annex." She really, really hoped that this wasn't a Flood trap.

Sure enough, there were 7 panels, set up in a curve. Past the panels stood a large round raised area in the floor. It was almost like the grav-lifts that adorned High Charity before it became Floodbait. Five of the seven panels seemed deactivated, their surfaces blank. The fourth one in the row blinked glyphs of red, and seemed rather damaged. The seventh sat unassumingly at the end, blinking a soft and steady blue. Odd, how the only one usable was the one that the voice had told the AI about. Very odd.

"There. The last one. It's blinking. Maybe we can use it to contact... somewhere. Anywhere." If combat forms burst out of the console, she was going to strangle the disembodied voice. That didn't make sense. It didn't have to, she was mostly rampant.

The Spartan walked to the end of the row, and stared down at the flickering symbols. Some of them were familiar, as he had seen them before the last time he was playing with Forerunner technology. Others were different than anything he had ever seen- although he noted an odd sense of familiarity with them anyway. He reached a hand out, and hit one of the more unfamiliar symbols. The glyphs that were there cleared, and the terminal projected a map of the galaxy. It automatically zoomed in to an area nearer to a charted sector, and then zoomed further still, landing on what looked to be another ring of the Halo Array.

"What is this, exactly? Is this an activation platform?" The Spartan pulled his hand back, in case it somehow could remotely activate the ring. Cortana winced. She could feel distrust creeping into his actions- he knew it as well as she did, that it wasn’t very much longer until she was completely rampant.

“I’m thinking it’s a portal system, actually. Look at the pad in the middle. The array activation area had no such pad- and it looks much like the Covenant teleportation systems,” she replied. She hoped to all deities above that she was right. 117 reached forward, and hit a few of the symbols that surrounded the image of the installation. One rotated the view, showing that the space around the ring was empty. The next made the middle pad hum to life, a soft white glow seeping out of edges of the platform. The space above it rippled softly, and then slowly split open, revealing a portal. 117 stepped forward and on to the platform, his purpose obvious.

“So… we’re going into that thing?”

“Do we have any other choice?” The Spartan clipped the assault rifle onto his back, and strode forward into the unknown. The portal rippled closed behind him, and the room was silent once more.

*~~~~~*
Location: Uncharted Sector, Installation 07

The Chief rematerialized on a very similar platform within an unknown structure on what he assumed to be the seventh installation. The room was illuminated only by a panel standing directly in front of him, still glowing with life due to the use of its portal system. Behind it sat a door, very similar to the one that had precluded the communications room on the unknown world. He grabbed the rifle from his back, and began to walk towards the door. The panel’s glow became less pronounced, and, by the time he had reached the door, had become completely dim.

The door slid open to reveal a large foyer, with long windows stretching from the floor to the ceiling, about 30 feet up. A swirling desert could be seen outside, quick streams of wind pulling sand up from the ground and pushing the particles into spiral pathways, before letting them back down to the ground. It didn’t look very welcoming, and the Chief was partially annoyed about the prospect of crossing it.

Suddenly, a sound pierced the silence of the structure. A humming. A very –familiar- humming. Chief sighed, and Cortana perked up, running the auditory stimulus through her files.

“Oh no. Not another one,” Cortana mumbled. The humming became more pronounced- it sounded much like a theme from a video game made popular during the 21st century.

Sure enough, from around a corner came a familiar floating “lightbulb”.

“Yep, another one.” It halted its humming when it noticed the humanoid figure standing in the foyer. It whizzed over, seemingly joyous in its flight.

“Greetings! I am 117649 Repentant Drift, I am the Monitor of Installation 07~ What fortune that a Reclaimer would come here!~” It was seemingly singing with happiness.

“Look, we already dealt with one of you going rampant, and we really don’t need another one-“ Chief started, the loss of Johnson still fresh in his mind. The Monitor seemed not to care, and began to speak once more.

“We must hurry- there is much to do! With all of the commotion surrounding the Ark, it is of imperative importance that you come with me- we must call the Guardian into action~!” The Monitor “looked” to Chief expectantly, hoping that he would agree to follow.

“If we follow you, will you lead us to a communication array? Somewhere to contact the rest of our species?” Cortana’s voice broadcasted through Chief’s helmet speakers. 117649 seemed slightly confused for a minute, and then hummed.

“Oh great, now you’ve confused it,” Chief started, wondering why the thing had started humming again.

“The nearest communication array is on the other side of the Installation, I’m afraid. There is, however, a Keyship within this facility. If you follow me, I will gladly lead you to it.” The Monitor seemed pleased with itself.

“Deal,” she replied. Chief felt rather irritated at having to follow another version of the pompous floating ball of humming that had killed one of the best soldiers the UNSC has seen.

“We don’t have any other choice, Chief. Just follow it. I’m not any happier about this than you are,” she said softly, hoping to urge the Spartan along. Repentant Drift was floating eagerly, shooting a vacant, lightbulb-y stare at the Chief. As 117 began to walk forward, the Monitor was once again sprung into action, as it led the super soldier down various corridors. Its humming was really beginning to gnaw on the Chief’s nerves, as every synthetic note that came from the thing’s voicebox reminded him of 343. Of that rampant little bastard.

After what seemed like an eternity of grating humming, the Monitor stopped in front of a large, ornate door.

“Ah. We have reached our destination. Come, I need your assistance in waking the Guardian.”

“And after that, you take us to the Keyship,” Chief said, his tone making his anger rather obvious.

“Of course. As we agreed on,” the Monitor said, shaking its body in what Chief assumed to be a nod. The doors slid open, and a soft blue-white light poured into the hallway. Repentant Drift floated inside, continuing its annoying humming. Chief shook his head, and knew it was almost over anyway. As he stepped into the room, he began to question what he was seeing. It looked shockingly like a cryogenic storage tube.

“This is where the Guardian sleeps. Come- it awaits your approval.” The Monitor hovered, obviously not aware that his now dead and once rampant peer had said the same thing about the cartographer on the Ark. The tension was nearly palpable, and the Chief moved forward into the room. There was another panel, filled with different charts, all of which seemingly showing vitals. Floating above the panel, like many Forerunner command systems, was a holographic button with various Forerunner symbols on it. He reached forward, and pressed it.

Sure enough, the tube let out a low hiss as it began to drain whatever was inside of it. Fog appeared at the sides, and Chief stepped back from the panel, readying his rifle for whatever the hell was going to come out of it. A few seconds later, the tube creaked open, slowly at first. Cortana monitored the Spartan’s heartrate, which had been climbing ever since he entered the room.

The rest of the front slid open, revealing a fully armored, humanoid figure within.

“Greetings, Guardian KI-12! Recent events have made your existence in this universe necessary. The Ark is nearly destroyed, and Installation 04 is still out of commission. The Monitor of Installation 04-“ Chief visibly tensed at the name of the thing- “Is not replying to any transmissions.”

“Is this… Is this a-“ Chief started, not quite able to finish his sentence.

“This is Guardian KI-12. An S-Class Warrior, preserved in a cryogenic slipspace bubble right before the Array was fired. Guardians are only to be called upon in times of extraordinary need.”

“If this is a Forerunner, then why are you speaking our language?” Cortana had ran her voice through his helmet speakers again. KI-12 was clearly taken aback by the presence of a second voice coming from the Reclaimer.

“Automatic translation software, of course. Your language has been programmed into each Monitor, ever since you first met up with 343 Guilty Spark. This Guardian’s armor is equipped with a system that automatically integrates human language into the brain. KI-12 can easily understand us, as I can understand you.” The Monitor did an odd “nod” again, and flew quickly to the Forerunner. It seemed happy that it had been woken up.

“Wow, it seems happy to see this thing.” Cortana noted, watching the AI float in gentle circles around the Guardian, who was now stepping out of the tube.

“Well, it’s probably been alone for who knows how long. These things go crazy when they’re alone. We know that firsthand,” Chief replied, wondering how long it would be before this one went the way of 343.

“Right. We woke up your Guardian. Now lead us to the Keyship,” Cortana broadcasted.

“Of course. You will be taking the Guardian with you, of course. And I will join as well.” For a moment, there was silence. Neither the Chief nor Cortana wanted the Monitor along with them, made obvious by the Chief’s stiffened posture.

“We don’t have any choice. We know how to kill these things if it goes crazy,” Cortana mumbled.

“Well, we can kill the Monitor, but what about this Guardian? Can it fight?” The Chief mused, wondering how exactly one should kill a Forerunner, or if the Guardian would have enough sense to not attack him.

“Come. I will lead you to the ship. You may decide where we go, as the Array is currently rather useless without the existence of the Fourth Installation,” hummed the Monitor. KI-12 stayed silent, stretching a bit. Without another moment, the lightbulb began to float out into the hall, slowly finding its way through the hallways once more.

“It’s odd… The Monitors are ridiculously talkative, but this KI-12 is more silent than you are,” Cortana smiled at her own poke at the austere super soldier.

“Who knows. Maybe it’s tired because it was just woken up,” replied the Chief, shrugging off the shot.

Before long, the makeshift group entered a large hangar, within which was the Keyship. It was pointing towards the heavens, its engines fully operational.

The group embarked, and once on board, the Monitor ran a system check on the ship. When all systems came back green, he quickly translated a few of the controls on the bridge.
“Now then. I said you could choose the location, and I keep to my word,” the Monitor buzzed.

“Well, we’re going to Earth,” started the Chief, hoping Cortana would automatically pop forth with the coordinates. The Chief pulled the data card from his helmet, letting the AI enter Earth’s coordinates into the system. The ship hummed to life, and the thrusters activated. Before long, the ship was piercing through space, heading for Earth.

“So… we’re going into that thing?”

The Chief rematerialized on a very similar platform within an unknown structure on what he assumed to be the seventh installation.
